Armstrongs multi-positional handholds when incorporated into a manhole frame provides a secure handhold adding an extra measure of safety and convenience for a worker entering or exiting a manhole. It is compliant with ASTM C478M in its upward position (ground level) and also in its downward position (below ground level).

Armstrongs multi-positional handholds device allows for the extension of the step/rung distance. ASTM C478M acknowledges the added safety feature of a handhold in a manhole frame by its provision for the distance from the rim of the manhole frame to the first step/rung in the manhole to be extended from 20" to 26" where a handhold is provided.
The common practice of the addition of a step/rung into the concrete support structure of the frame, to comply with ASTM C478M and its requirement of a maximum of 20" will typically reduce the clearance in the area across from the step/rung from 25" to 19". Ask any worker entering or exiting a manhole if he does not appreciate the added 6" of clearance in this area as afforded by the incorporation of Armstrongs multi-positional handholds into the manhole frame and the elimination of the step/rung in this area.
Armstrongs multi-positional handholds device provides controlled entry and exit from a manhole. "AMPH" positioned at ground level provides a secure hand hold for a worker to stabilize his entry into a manhole. Choosing to use the handhold in its below ground level position, a worker need only to reach a few inches below ground level for the same secure handhold. Upon exiting the manhole the moment he grasps the handhold his exit from the manhole will be controlled and comfortable.
